Introduction Into Channel 4

Channel 4 is free-to-air and freely available throughout the UK. They have the UK’s biggest free streaming service, All 4, plus a network of 12 television channels. Since Channel 4 was created in 1982, it has been at the center of national conversations and a catalyst for the creation of a world-beating production sector in the UK. Their purpose is to create change through entertainment. They do this by representing unheard voices, challenging with purpose, and reinventing entertainment.

Channel 4's unique model—commercially funded but publicly owned—means that they're able to offer independent and distinctive, universal content that reflects the interests of different communities across the UK. As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 commissions UK content from the independent production sector and currently works with around 300 creative companies across the UK every year.

"This apprenticeship allows me an insight into the media field, and a chance to contribute to something substantive, progressive, and important. Telly has played a significant role in my life and the shaping of my identity, and I’m glad to be supporting an inspiring team doing important work that ensures it can continue to do this for others." - Robin Hubbard-Brown – Channel 4 Creative Diversity apprentice.

Creating Change Through Entertainment

Channel 4’s vision is to represent unheard voices: Channel 4 has a strong commitment to representing the whole of the UK. It means using their strong brand and wide reach to elevate unheard voices – from diverse communities, emerging writers and producers, to those with different viewpoints or experiences.

Challenge with purpose: Channel 4 are here to challenge groupthink and hold power to account. They don’t challenge for the sake of it. They’re here to test boundaries, challenge conventions and inspire reflection and critical thought.

Reinvent entertainment: Channel 4 has a long-established role as an innovator in the creative industries across ‘entertainment’ in the broadest sense: they challenge themselves to continuously refresh what they do creatively; to develop new and emerging talent; to find new ways of reaching audiences; and to find new ways of working with their partners.
